TRIBUTE TO MICHEL BASSOMPIERRE

It is with immense sadness that we learned of the passing of Michel Bassompierre. A major figure in the contemporary art scene, he died suddenly, leaving behind a body of work that was deeply singular, imbued with gentleness, quiet strength, and an absolute respect for living beings.

Born in Paris in 1948, he developed a fascination with the animal world at a very early age. “Since I was 4 or 5 years old, I never stopped drawing them,” he once said. Throughout his life, he continued to observe, understand, and shape them. Trained at the Fine Arts School of Rouen, he refined a remarkably precise eye, giving rise, since the 1970s, to a body of work recognized and collected around the world.

One of the last great modelers of his generation, Michel Bassompierre infused matter with a unique presence. Through his bears, gorillas, and elephants, he created pure, soothing, almost silent forms that resonate without ever imposing themselves. “What I find beautiful in nature, I can share to open people’s eyes,” he said. Behind each sculpture lay a deep sensitivity and a rare ability to capture the essence of life.

A discreet and profoundly humble man, he created with total freedom, referring to his works simply as “toys,” made first and foremost for himself. “I am an old child who continues to make his toys.” His work, filled with tenderness and respect, was an ode to nature, but also a reminder of its fragility.

Today, his sculptures remain. They will continue to watch over, to move, and to keep alive the singular poetry that was his.

Our most sincere thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and team.
