BRUNO CATALANO – TRAVEL TO NEW YORK

BRUNO CATALANO

For the first time, French sculptor Bruno Catalano’s emblematic “Travellers” are coming to New York.
From May 2024 to May 2025, nine monumental artworks will be presented in the heart of Park Avenue (34th – 38th Street).

« HUBERT III »
312 x 80 x 100 cm
Original Bronze

A metaphor for humanity, “HUBERT III” symbolising the moments of doubt and questioning that every traveller has gone through.
He invites us to stop for a few minutes before setting off again, stronger and more sure of the road ahead…

« BENOÎT »
330 x 110 x110 cm
Original Bronze

“BENOÎT” is a friend and collaborator of Bruno Catalano’s foundry. What he’s carrying in his suitcase is the journey of his life, the heartbreak, what he’s left behind.
On the move, on the move, he doesn’t let the trials of life, exile and detachment stop him…

« BLEU DE CHINE »
300 x 110 x110 cm
Original Bronze

“BLEU DE CHINE” is a dedication to all those people who arrived in Marseille to work. It’s also a tribute to the welcoming land that is this city, with its port at its epicenter.
From this sculpture emanates a story that speaks to all Marseillais, especially the dockworkers, of whom Bruno Catalano was one.

« J4 »
304 x 120 x 120 cm
Original Bronze

“J4” is Bruno Catalano’s first monumental artwork. It is named after a quay in the Joliette district of Marseille, the sculptor’s heartland.

« KHADINE »
305 x 110 x 110 cm
Original Bronze

The man pictured here is a recurring character in the ‘Voyageurs’ series. He is also a fellow traveler, friend and model of Bruno Catalano.
“KHADINE” strides forward with a suitcase in hand. From his tall stature, he seems to observe a distant horizon, indiscernible to us.
Echoing the journey of this Senegalese man, torn between two countries and two continents, the work opens on the African diaspora’s questioning of its past and its heritage in the globalized world.

« L’ÉTTOFE DES HÉROS »
300 x 100 x 110 cm
Original Bronze

“L’ÉTTOFE DES HÉROS” has a special status. This faceless work presents two contrasting facets:
on the one hand, the darkness of war, and on the other, exploit, a taste for adventure and a certain attraction to danger.
“L’ÉTTOFE DES HÉROS” is thus the Traveller par excellence.

« PIERRE DAVID »
300 x 105 x 105 cm
Original Bronze

Bruno Catalano depicts human beings torn apart, crossed by a great emptiness that evokes the scars of departures and separations, and identities fragmented by hardship.
“PIERRE DAVID” represents a colleague from the foundry with whom the sculptor has worked for many years.

« VAN GOGH »
430 x 120 x 120 cm
Original Bronze

“VAN GOGH” is a veritable figurehead for Bruno Catalano. This “Traveller” wears a canvas on his back, and stands as an edifying paradigm of an aptitude for renunciation.
Bruno Catalano, having himself given up everything to devote himself exclusively to art, can only, without pretension, see in it a mirror.

« VOYAGE À NEW YORK »
315 x 100 x 100 cm
Original & Mirror Polish Bronze

“VOYAGE À NEW YORK” does not appear to be torn apart from the inside, but rather to be in transit to another reality:
it enters or exits a parallel space-time where its silhouette fades in and out of view.
Acting as a mirror or screen, the sculpture welcomes the reflection of the surrounding scenery, as if it were part of itself.
