LES FRÈRES GUINET
Biography
Art has been part of the Guinet brothers’ family, Charley and Maxence, for several generations. Self-taught, together they have fashioned their own artistic technique.
Around ten years ago, Maxence opened his own masonry company, where Charley also works. To diversify and bring a more artistic approach to their skills, the two brothers decided to take a course in Texas to learn how to create rock decorations from a world-renowned craftsman.
During this trip, they discovered the Enchanted Rock natural park. Walking along arid paths for several hours, the two brothers, seeking shelter from the heat, spotted a cavity which they decided to explore. After about twenty metres, they discovered an immense room containing several hundred sculptures of unknown origin… A major and astonishing discovery. After years of analysis and research, the two brothers share their explanations: “We are in the year 20,000 BC, in the middle of the Upper Palaeolithic period, the longest period in prehistory. A small group of homo sapiens nicknamed the ‘visionary sculptors’ are expressing their thoughts of the future by sculpting in rock the most unrealistic objects of the time.
The Guinet brothers drew their inspiration from the most emblematic figures of antiquity. As minimalist visual artists, they bring to life the fiction of ‘visionary sculptors’. Combining the past with the present, they freeze in stone the artefacts of this millennium.
