Biography – MATHIEU
Georges Mathieu was a French painter, born January 27, 1921 in Boulogne-sur-Mer, died June 10, 2012 in Boulogne-Billancourt. He is considered as the founder of lyrical abstraction which influenced the abstract expressionist painters.
Georges Mathieu advocates a non-figurative representation and thus frees himself from the constraints of the world surrounding him -“It is a prodigious adventure deciding to oppose yourself to the world, the world of forms, the world of habits and behaviors. Success is patience, willingness, luck and of course the gift; not only the gift of painting, but that of a certain … “Clairvoyance.”.
“Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur” in France, Commander of the Arts and Letters Order, member of the “Académie des Beaux-Arts” and Officer of the “Order of the Crown of Belgium” in 1982: Mathieu is still considered today as one of the greatest representative of French contemporary art.
